Glaser’s Ghosts [feedly]

----
Glaser's Ghosts
// Print Magazine

When you Google "Dylan + Glaser" you will get pages of postage stamp-sized reproductions of his famous 1966 Bob Dylan poster that was folded into Dylan's "Greatest Hits" LP released by CBS Records. It was inspired by Marcel Duchamp's 1957 self portrait and the color palette found in Persian miniatures. Of the poster, Milton Glaser said: "The history of visual things in the world is my playpen."

Well, perhaps the Dylan poster is not as copied or mimicked as much as Glaser's I HEART logo, but it has been more than a playground for other artists and designers. It'd been an entire amusement park for designers and illustrators throughout the world—for decades and counting.

Why one image captures so much attention and retention is something of a mystery, particularly decades after its stylistic heyday, but there are images, like Robert Indiana's "LOVE," Grant Wood's "American Gothic" and most of René Magritte's images that have also triggered parodies, homages and dumb attempts a humor galore. Here are a few of the Glaser interpretations, including some featuring Glaser himself:

'Fundamentals of Drawing' Now in English [feedly]

'Fundamentals of Drawing' Now in English
// Gurney Journey

The 2007 Russian drawing textbook Fundamentals of Drawing is now available in an English-language print edition.

I first reported on the book when I encountered it as a Russian-language text.

The book is by the Russian master Vladimir Mogilevtsev. He is the head of the Drawing Department of the Russian Academy of Arts (aka Repin Art Institute) in St. Petersburg. The book has been a bestseller in Russia and beyond.

It's one of the best ways for those of us outside Russia to understand how drawing is taught in the Academy there.

Mr. Mogilevtsev combines accurate observational drawing with a sensitive appreciation of old master sculptures, paintings, and drawings. The book provides plenty of relevant examples by masters of the past.

He documents the production of two drawings: a female portrait and a male standing nude. Along with each step is an explanation of the thought process that helps lead to success, along with warnings about common mistakes. For example: "Common mistake: A knee of the supporting leg is accentuated instead of the protruding knee. As a result, the supporting leg appears bent at the knee."

I am impressed with the way Mr. Mogilevtsev emphasizes the importance of identifying a personal response before commencing with a drawing. He says: "A work of art creates its own emotional environment, and little by little, unobtrusively, it exerts its influence on a viewer."

The book is large format, hard-cover, and beautifully printed. It is a welcome addition to the methods taught in the Charles Bargue Drawing Course, which is used as a text in many American and European ateliers.

Inside the Well-Traveled Sketchbooks of Artist Dina Brodsky [feedly]

----
Inside the Well-Traveled Sketchbooks of Artist Dina Brodsky
// Colossal

dinabrodksy_07

Artist Dina Brodsky has many focuses to her practice, painting in miniature on canvas and paper, and recently turning to her family, friends, and Instagram community to submit trees for her to reproduce in a drawn project titled "The Secret Life of Trees." Throughout both of these processes she remains extremely attentive to her sketchbook, filling its pages with detailed drawings of architecture, wildlife, and scattered portraits of strangers that accompany her looped handwriting. The drawings are often finished with touches of watercolor, gouache, gold leaf, and found objects from her travels, like in one where she pastes a rupee note from India.

An exhibition of her series, "The Secret Life of Trees," was recently shown at Bernarducci Meisel Gallery in NYC. Brodsky sells recently produced paintings and drawings on Etsy, and you can see more of her sketchbook works and miniatures on her Instagram.

Behind the Scenes of Jungle Book and Aristocats [feedly]

Behind the Scenes of Jungle Book and Aristocats
// Deja View

Some wonderful never before seen photos featuring a look into the production process of The Jungle Book and The Aristocats recently surfaced on Getty Images.
The pic above shows voice actors Sebastian Cabot, Sterling Holloway and Phil Harris during a reading or recording session. Bagheera, Kaa and Baloo in the same room!
Clint Howard (director Ron Howard's brother) is lending his voice to Colonel Hathi's son.

Background painter Al Dempster is arranging stunning Jungle Book backgrounds on story board panels.

Ollie Johnston animates a scene with Bagheera, the panther.

Director Woolie Reitherman, John Lounsbery and a couple of assistants are reviewing pencil animation on a moviola.

It turns out they are looking at Lounsbery's fight sequence with Shere Khan and the Vultures.

The same group is inspecting Jungle Book character models, which were used to promote the film.

Al Dempster is inspecting a cel from a King Louie scene, animated by Frank Thomas.

A cel set up featuring Mowgli's confrontation with Shere Khan is being reviewed, before being sent to the camera department.

Woolie's mind is already on the next animated feature The Aristocats. He is looking at Ken Anderson's character research.

More of Ken's work is being discussed.

I don't know when these rate photos were taken, but my guess would be sometime in 1967. Jungle Book wasn't released until later that year, and Aristocats was in pre-production.
