Outdated, nerdy, ugly. That's how some people would describe bowling alleys' decoration. De facto, with an artistic design worthy of low-quality nightclubs, it can be understandable. However, with his "Bowling Alleys" series, result of a bold road-trip in south of Germany, the photographer Robert Götzfried offers a brand new perception of these places. Not without a certain irony.

In general, the sky isn't a great medium for creativity. Your options are limited to a banner pulled behind a plane, or using special smoke to write giant letters that will get swept away by the wind—maybe before you reach the end of the message. But there's another way that pilots express themselves, though it's not immediately apparent to the ground-bound. Using a flight tracking program called CloudAhoy, pilots around the country have been drawing some intricate designs in the sky for a contest to see who can most effectively merge their skills in the air with their creative flair.

The contest, called the Wild Blue Doodle and put on by aviation company Lightspeed, challenged pilots to "create a work of art in the sky" with their flight paths, as tracked by the software, for a chance to win a new headset (worth $850). Pilots around the country took advantage of the chance to show off. The large-scale designs include a sneaker, Snoopy in his "World War I Flying Ace" guise, a howling wolf, and even a self-portrait of sorts—one pilot flew his DA40 plane in the shape of a DA40.

Creating these images took some careful planning. Brian Danza, the pilot of the DA40, told Flying magazine that he used Photoshop to create the outline of the plane, then traced that outline in Google Maps to get the coordinates of all the turns he'd need to make after taking off from Leesburg, Virginia. He then uploaded those coordinates to his aircraft's GPS system, which guided him through the 80-mile-wide image.

After judges pick the top 10, based on artistry and challenge, other users of the software will then vote to see who gets that high-end headset, or one of the fancy leather flight bags for second and third place.

A Trip To Tynemouth is a short watercolor illustrated manga by famed Ghibli anime director Miyazaki Hayao. The manga bookends a collection of short stories ( translated into Japanese language ) by British writer Robert Westall, whose novels on World War II ( and in particular aviation and planes associated during that period ) has had a strong creative influence on some of Miyazaki's works. The book also includes an essay penned by Miyazaki where he shares his thoughts on Westall's stories as well as his own experiences with WWII.

The manga follows Miyazaki ( appearing once again as his alter-ego pig character ) in an imaginary trip to visit Westall ( appearing as a terrier ) in Tynemouth, where many of his stories are set in.

Please note that this is not an art book, and the bulk of the contents is Japanese text. Miyazaki-san's charming illustrations however are worth the price of the book, in my opinion.

I also highly recommend all of Miyazaki's watercolor mangas, works like The Wind Rises and Daydream Notes.

Starting Is No Longer the Hardest Part!

I'm out of practice in the studio. All summer and for most of September I was off my regular schedule — travelling, working, walking around enjoying the weather, catching up with friends, eating well but not holding myself to any kind of art regimen. If that wall of time has built up for you too and you aren't quite sure how to get into the swing of painting or drawing after an extended hiatus, take my recommendation and start with abstract painting.

Why Abstract Painting?

Do you remember when you were little and you went back to school after a summer of doing as few school-related activities as possible? I always remember how weird it felt to hold a pencil again. And my penmanship? Horrible on that first day. Like I was all thumbs! It can be the same in your sketchbook or on your canvas.

You feel unconnected and awkward making marks because you are out of practice. With abstract painting, that's okay. It can even be a plus. Marks will vary and be unexpected. Let them! Start abstractly, get your rhythm, and take it anywhere!

6 Abstract Art Prompts to Jump Start Your Creativity

1. Connect 7 dots. Literally dot your surface seven times and get started connecting them with pattern and texture, color and any kind of mark that comes out of you. All are welcome.
2. Use your non-dominant hand to start. This way you know that you will get some unanticipated marks. You can always switch back once you feel like you've got some inspiration flowing.
3. Alter your surface. Crumple your paper. Smear it with a wash. Flick paint at it. Put something unique down first and it might adjust your vision so that you work in a different way.
4. Only one color. Now you really have to work on texture and forms to get creative.
5. Only one tool. That means one brush. And remember a brush has one traditional way of being used but several nontraditional ways of being used.
6. Close your eyes. Or blindfold yourself. If you are at home, no one will see you. You get to start fresh and see with your mind's eye. Surprisingly enough it will likely set your hand free.
