Willem Arondeus (Dutch, 1894 – 1943)
Salome, 1916
Willem Arondeus was a little-known artist who lived as an openly gay man before World War II. During the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam, he led a Resistance Council that would create forged documents to hide Jews from the Nazis.
When the Nazis discovered that Arondeus was helping the Jews, he was condemned to death. Awaiting his execution by the Nazis in 1943, Arondeus wrote, "Let it be known that homosexuals are not cowards."
